Thank you for tuning in. I'm Greg. I'm Mike. And we are the Pickleballers Next Door. We are for the Joes and not the pros. Your court, our court. Thanks for tuning in to Pickleballers Next Door. I'm Greg. I'm Mike. And we are the Pickleballers Next Door. Yeah, our court's your court. Heck yeah. So how are you today, Mike? Well, as I told you, we had an oops here a few minutes ago. We did. Damn it. But I'm still a little froggy. I sounded better the other day. You did? And maybe this is my old man voice coming. Maybe this is just happening. I think that's just a thing. Oh, don't even tell you. Come on. Come on. See? I always make it fun. Yeah. But I'm doing good. We were at the Hilton last night. Inverness. Inverness. Don't say Hilton. I know. They get really angry. I see the manager. He says, you want to be kicked out of here? I said, no. Inverness. But some great people. It's a private club. They do a lot of golfing there. It's a premier golf course here in Centennial, Colorado. And so we are getting those golfers into pickleball. Heck yeah. And it's awesome. So it was a lot of fun. Yeah. But how about you? Well, I had to go to an eye exam yesterday because, I hate to say, I'm starting to get old. I feel like you. No, I'm just kidding. Oh, hey now. No, my voice isn't froggy. And no, I'm fine. I just needed, I needed glasses. I couldn't, I can't read. Well, wait till you see all this beauty when you get those glasses on and you look across here. I think that's the reason my eyes are black. I think you went black. Yeah. Laser. They're scorched. The corneas are scorched. All this beauty over here. We'll call it that. There's a beauty in everyone, Mike. Beauty in the beast. There's beauty in everyone. Well, anyway, that's awesome. I mean, that's not awesome, but that's, I don't know if that's good. You're a good pickleball player, but I think the glasses are going to make me a five. Oh, that's on war. That's what I'm a little worried about. Yeah. You better watch yourself. I'm going to get some glasses too. Then. Yeah. Heck yeah. Well, I don't know. You have them. You have like three pairs everywhere. They're not working. No. Uh, but today we have Hannah Alcaro, Alcaro and yeah, close. Close. I'm not even trying to get it. I'll butcher it. Um, it's Italian. You know? Oh, there we go. We're going to correct you. It's what we do. Yeah. I like it. Uh, and, uh, she is in Illinois working at the Pickler coaching. Uh, we're going to dive in and talk to her about her, how she found pickleball and what her journey looks like. She's doing some great things out there in pickleball. So this is pretty awesome. Yes. So we'll go ahead and give us a little spiel. Give us a little spiel of who you are and, uh, you know, where you were, how you got in this crazy sport. Yeah. Sorry. We have to do this again. Yeah. This is your second time. Yeah. We, uh, I prefer to tell it again. I need a second chance, but I feel like I screwed something up. You're fine. I'm Hannah Alcaro. Uh, I'm from, uh, Arlington Heights, Illinois. Uh, I'm based. I work at, I'm actually the only person in the country that works at two Picklers. I know. And the best part is I work at two Picklers, two hours apart from each other. Two hours apart. Wow. Yeah. That's my commute. Uh, I am a collegiate pickleball player. I'm the founder and president of the Illinois state pickleball club. And I am also now a PPR certified coach and youth pro for programming at Pickler and, um, just all around pickleball player, lover, fighter, lover, whatever you want to call me. Welcome. Welcome to the addiction. Welcome. Yeah. And so, um, you, when you, when you started this pickleball club at your college, um, what did you start with initially and where are you at now? Member wise. So yeah, my, so it was just a group of friends. We just won. My friends asked me if they wanted to play pickleball. And I was like, I know a little bit. I'll play. Uh, I definitely, the first time we played, I made up rules to win. I'll be honest. Cause I didn't know the rules. So I made them up so I could win. I felt really good about myself. I like it. And, um, Oh, that was a bad shot. Sorry. Oh no. That was now. So in that scenario. Yeah. It bounced in the kitchen, but like, if you like, it's like the floor is lava. So like at that point, no one can go in there. Well, there's actually, you know, there's this game actually. Now I work for called pickle me crazy. Um, they have this game that like you add rules to the game and like you pick a card and you add a new rule and it's just so much fun to play. It's like playing. Like you're trying to win teaching your new friends how to play. That'd be a good drinking game. Well, that's, it sounds like when I play open, it sounds like when I play open play, I think they're playing that game a lot of times when we're playing, when you play it, when you play open play in the lower levels, that's what happens. You just, you need to feel good, you know? Yeah. Oh yeah. But yeah, I started playing and the club started when I was, was I a junior in college? And then we recently, when I became president of the club, we actually went to collegiate duper and which is kind of a big deal in the pickleball community. And, uh, I recently got the team to play in a couple of tournaments. Uh, we started with only 15 members. Now we have 200 members in our group me, but only like, yeah. But like about, I would say 40 to 50 people that like actually show up to play frequently. That's a lot. That's good. Is it, do you think that's because of being in, you know, going to school? I mean, you know, you're trying to fit this in or is it just a college you're just not, I'll play that today. I won't do it tomorrow. You know, I think, you know, I, you know how you guys go like after work or before work and you want to like, and that's when you usually play. I think that's the same thing with students because our like schedules are different than like school, like actual school, like high school and elementary school. I think we, we have a lot more free time and I think pickleball collegiate is expanding because we have a lot more free time. That makes sense. Yeah, that does. Yeah. Well, that was a problem for me. Are the courts inside or outside? So we have two courts. When we first started, we were at outdoor courts. We did have to drive there. Then we found courts closer. And then when Pickler opened up, actually, I found out right away that they were opening up a Pickler in normal. And I called them right away and said, what can I do to help promote and make this place happen? They hired me on as a ambassador for collegiate. And then I was hired as front desk. And I've been a part of the Pickler ever since. And then luckily enough, there was another Pickler by my hometown in Arlington Heights in Mount Prospect. And, you know, it's funny. They're the same distance. My apartment to the Pickler normal is the exact same distance as my house to the Pickler in Mount Prospect. So I was like, is it destiny? Do you mean for this to happen? Yeah. Yeah. You're meant to be there for sure. Yeah. Yeah. I do. I do love working for Pickler. I think I do love working like with corporate also, because I work at two Picklers. I have some like more insight than most employees do, especially since like someone made a joke that I'm like the secret corporate spy. Like I'm undercover boss or something. That's funny. I'm like, it's not like that. I just have friends up north. I like to like check in with, do you get a lot of gifts like from the other employees and stuff like, Hey, Hey, be nice. Be nice. Yeah. Don't report me. There's so yeah, Yeah, actually a lot of the times, like we're not allowed to play on the clock. If you work the front desk, like we're not, we're like clocked in. That makes sense. You know, you're not supposed to enjoy work. Oh, trust me. I know all about it. I worked at Costco for 25 years. You talk about not enjoying work. Yeah. Oh God. Dude, do they, they don't have pickleball courts, I've seen it. I'm like, get the Kirkland logo on it. And it's perfect. Right. It's in the mail. Well, I, we like, we love the picklers here. I mean, I have to tell you when they got here, they're, they're pretty new here. We had one in Loveland, but I never went to Loveland, but they're fairly new to Colorado. Well, Loveland's like two and a half hours. Yeah, that's two. It's a far and it's yeah. So we're, but when they got here, I do love what they have there. I mean, it's, I was a little like, man, this membership thing monthly, but they offer a lot. I mean, you get classes, you have fun things, you have tournaments. I mean, I was worried it was going to be too busy, but it actually is. It's a lot of fun. There's like, I just, I did the speed ball, they call it or something. I just tried that. Oh yeah. And I did, I did just recently coach a clinic and that one, I had to coach last minute because the person coaching, I was like, Oh, that's a lot of fun. I mean, it's like, I just, I did the speed ball, they call it or something. I did just recently coach a clinic and that one, I had to coach last minute because the person coaching, I couldn't make it. And I was, I was already there. And I, I decided to do a really dumb game as in everyone aimed for me. Everyone please. You get points. I called it like pickleball dodgeball. I would like chuckle ball at any random point for them to like react. And I said negative a thousand at the face. Hundred points. I was like, Oh, that's a lot of fun. I mean, it's like, I did just recently coach a clinic and that one, I had to coach last minute because the person coaching, I was like, Oh, that's a lot of fun. I mean, I did just recently coach a clinic and that one, negative a thousand at the face hundred points at the legs. And I take it in the face a couple of times. So I won my own game. Oh, again, give us a, give us a little background of how you got into pickleball. I know we've had this, I feel like we've had this conversation like it's groundhog day, but I started. So funny enough, in 2019, my parents were in Cabo San Lucas visiting a couple of friends. And there was a coaching club within Cabo that they learned how to play actually from Matt King, the actor who is the head pro VP of pickleball at particular right now. And it, yeah. So my parents learned from him and they taught me actually in Hilton Head, South Carolina at the Palmetto Dunes court. And their courts are so nice, so beautiful. I actually did play tennis in high school first. I have that background. I know I'm one of those assholes. I did walk in like that, but I've learned to adapt more, but I did play all four years. I ended up playing with my, my tennis partner became my pickleball partner. Over the summer that I graduated high school and we started drilling and then played in a tournament. And then within that same year, I started the club and yeah, I mean, pickleball, I've played for about five years now and I'm loving every second. Awesome. Yeah. How do you not? Yeah. I mean, especially for how young I am to discover the sport. I've heard like a lot of people discovered it during the pandemic, which was honestly something that got me through the pandemic was pickleball. I would say. I think it helped a lot of people. I really think this is when it really exploded. I didn't discover it till after the pandemic. Yeah. I was after too. Really? Yeah. I was after. You were behind the trend, man. I know. And you know, and then I got addicted and now look at me. I have a podcast about it. Podcast. And like I said, if you offer food or you say anything pickleball and food we're there. Yeah. Yeah. I, uh, yeah. I mean, my addiction did go a little far. I'll be honest. I did have to go to pickleball anonymous for a bit. Uh, cause I, uh, last year I did focus. I will admit to myself, I did not walk in on school. Kids walk in on school before pickleball. Okay. Um, I have, I'm, I'm studying elementary education and I was supposed to be doing teaching this semester, but because of professor, I got a 72% of class, but my professor called it a D. So now I had already given up my job at Pickler Normal and started at Pickler Mt. Prospect. And I also did not have my apartment. And then I got my apartment back luckily. So, and you got a D. You got a D because I think. No, I don't think it's because of pickleball. I think it was because of me working on time management, which I think this is a good lesson to learn for myself. Because you were playing pickleball. Yes, I was playing. Yes, that's how it is. You were right. It was pickleball. You were right. You're right. That's me. I was, I own another business in construction and, um, they would be like, where are you at? Mike? I'm at, I said, I'm in a meeting, but they could hear that clang, but I started, when I started, I did one time, then two days, then three days. Then it was seven days. I mean, this thing, this pickleball, buddy, I play twice a day, seven days a week. Yeah, there we go. I'm retaking one class. I got nothing else better to do with my life. Right. And yeah, and I've already taken the class and I have all the homework done and everything like that. Shout out to Dr. Bowman, my new professor, best guy ever. Well, thank you. I mean, this is what's great about the pickleball. Yeah. All the great people that you would have never met, you know? So, Oh, don't make me cry. Cause I have met some of the greatest people playing pickleball, especially at, at Picklers. I've like networked so much and, you know, working at two, especially, and also the different playing styles I see. Yeah. You meet all kinds of people, like all over the world, all walks of life. Yeah. It's amazing. Oh, yeah. It brings us to a common ground. It brings everybody. It doesn't matter where you're from, who you are, what you've done. It brings you to this common ground place. Some, there's still some, some beetles out there. Yeah. Well, yeah. Well, you, you know, you got a body bag, the deuce bag. You know it. Yeah. I, I, uh, but I think one thing about pickleball, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's, it's crazy when you think about pickleball. It's his, here's my definition of it. Pickleball as a community of people that liked to hit a ball and what's an anger out and have some time to themselves, but also no people that want those same things. Yeah. So Mike's always called it his escape. It's my escape. I literally, when I leave, get into court, phones, family, all the world. Kind of the traffic, um, a burger. Yeah. Take me back out of the court. I know like if I'm playing, my wife cannot get ahold of me standing in front of me or she calls the, the, uh, the facility I'm at to get ahold of me. Cause my phone is in my bag. That's the only time I'm not on my phone. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. You exited the world. Yeah. I mean, my mom, I haven't, don't get me wrong. I love family dinner. I love going home to family dinner and everything like that. But of course, a lot of the time I can't make it because I'm in the middle of a game. That's 11 to 12 and it's about to go to 21. Right. So I'm not leaving. Well, I don't care. Well, there's the other part, right? Everybody isn't it? One more. One more. Oh, we got to break this. We got to break the tie. We got to break the tie. This is a, this is a, this is a rubber match. Let's go. Yeah. Rubber match. To be honest, I was at home playing basketball and I was supposed to hit the road like really early the next morning to get back to Chicago for work and I, my friends were like, I was playing with Jim Houston, Lincoln Booster, super cool guys I've known since normal day one. They've helped me a lot with my game. He's also ahead of the central Illinois pickleball club and I've helped him. I've helped him a little bit being a club owner myself. So I'm glad I can share my insight. But Jim and Lincoln were like, one more, just one more. It's like 10 o'clock at night. And I'm like, dude, I've got to go. They're like, just, you know, we're tied. We're tied. You've been smack talking this whole game. I'm like, quiet the whole time. That's a lie. I definitely was smack talking. I love it. I want to play. I want to play, you know? Yeah, we want it. We'd like to have some fun. You play with me. That's what everyone says. My one friend tries to get me to play this one game and I think it's so funny that she keeps trying. It's called silent pickleball. I don't think anyone's ever heard of it because it's not a real sport and it just can't happen. And well, I did actually learn how to play. Um, there's a lot, uh, my one friend Wilson, he's deaf and he taught me actually how to do sign language pickleball. I've played with some, um, deaf pickleball players out here in Colorado. I think it's a cool thing to learn. Yeah, definitely. Like I said, community, anybody, community, anybody can play pickleball. Oh yeah. Like it's so cool that this sport can be for anybody. It's everybody. I was, I was just at a pickler and they had a, uh, four guys in the wheelchairs playing pickleball and it was awesome. That was really cool. And they're fast. Oh my gosh. Yeah. And so the one thing I love about pickleball is that you can go and play against a 12 year old and get worked and you can go against an 80 year old and get worked. And it's happened to me on both ends of that scale. So that's why I'm not afraid to body bag an 80 year old. I'm going to do it to you because I've been body bagged by an 80 year old, a little lady. Payback's a bitch. Payback's a bitch. That's what you tell her. I've, I've had a 75 year old woman drop so many F bombs at me on the court. It's, it's, it's insane. You know, she, you know, what's funny is I play with a lot of my old, so I'm an, I'm a teacher going to be a teacher myself and I have a potty mouth like a sailor. So hopefully my future interviewers don't hear my potty mouth podcast, but apologies in advance. But my, I play with a lot of my old teachers and they asked me to call them by their first name and I just can't do it. And I will hear them scream the F bomb so loud. It's like my, my old gym teacher, who, by the way, didn't teach me pickleball. I never had pickleball in gym class, like some people. Yeah, me either. And so, so me and him have that grudge because I could have learned very early and been the best, but you know, it wasn't in the curriculum. No. And gosh dang curriculum. He, he did it on purpose. He knew, he knew 10 years later he was going to have to play me in a tournament. Yeah, 100%, that's what it was. He planned it out. He knew it. Evil genius. But I like, he, it is like funny to watch people that like change. People call me the, um, the she-hulk of pickleball because I get so locked in during a tournament or like, I'm just like not myself. And I think, I think I love that nickname. First of all, I think, yeah, I have, I think there's all of us that have those moments. I have, I seem to have a lot more that I've gotten older. Yeah, no doubt. I definitely Hulk out mid game. I Hulk out mid game. I'll tell you that. I'd love to watch that happen. Yeah. I was like, I'm playing with like my partner's like Hulk smash. I'm like, um, Oh, what is the Bruce Banner say? He goes, don't worry. I'm always angry. Like that's, that's me in pickleball. I'm just always like, I got a grudge with someone on the other side of the net and that game is done. Yeah. Even if I do, well, the worst is when I do know them and I have to apologize right after. Just don't apologize. Yeah. Spew that person. I don't know how not to. Everyone. I even have a shirt that says, sorry, not sorry on it. I love that. I say that all the time. It looks like, it looks like the sorry logo. Shout out to pickled paddlers. Another one of my sponsors. You're wearing it on your Instagram. I am. Yeah. There's such a cool company. They, they make so many funny shirts. I have one that also says everything hurts and it's like pickleball, pickleball, like bruises all over me. Heck yeah. Heck yeah. It's so cool. Now you're going to, I think. Yeah, go ahead. Sorry. I was going to say, I think a lot of pickle pickleball merchandise, like has become so popular since the sport started that like I would buy a Walmart shirt that sounded funny and say it's like a cool brand. So have you heard of casual dinker? I have. Yes. I like their company too. Yes. So I, for my, my personal Instagram, I have merch on, on his website. So like we collaborate. Really? Yeah. It's called pickle or die. Okay, cool. Yeah. Like funny or die. What's that? Like the comedy show, like funny or die. The comedy show. Oh yeah. My bad. Sorry. Wrong. It's cool. I was trying to sound old. I just sounded even older. Don't worry about it. I had to look at him funny. I was like, what? But it's the revolutionary flag with the snake chopped into 13 sections. That said, join or die. Now. Oh, got it. Yeah. Yeah. He's got, he's got some, he's got some pretty cool stuff though. And he's a great guy. Yeah. Yeah. Our podcast. Yeah. I love merchandise. I mean, I liked the one you guys gave me too. The, um, what is it? I can't read the back right now, but I did love what you said on the back. It says, uh, neighbor when you're on the court, everyone's a neighbor. Yeah. Like we said, pickleball is a community. We're a neighborhood. Yes, it is. Mr. Rogers shows up and we're, we're all playing. We're all friends. We're all friends. Until you body bag. The douche bag. That's my new saying. Now, probably. Yeah. So where do you see, where do you see yourself going? I know you're going to be a teacher, but here's what I think. I own other businesses, but pickleball is like its own business. So like it's two worlds. So where do you see yourself going here in the future for a pickleball? I think, you know, I want to go above and beyond as far as I can with it. But obviously I want to finish my degree. Um, I want to, you know, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to, I want to finish my, a degree. Lock in on school. Let me finish, uh, cause I've, I'm taking the time to come. You. I got, I'm not going to waste this, uh, semester, no, but I'm also not gonna waste this semester and give up on pickleball. There it is. I was telling you is a tough, it's a tough call. I think, I think because of the amount of free time I have, I've also playing pickleball. I haven't had this joy since I was in elementary school or since I wasn't like a full-time athlete. Like, yeah, I will tell you this. I gained a freshman. 15 is real. People, freshmen, freshmen, 30, sophomore, 30 is also real. Okay. Okay. So I, I gained a lot of weight going into school and not being an athlete like I used to be. Right. And, uh, now I have lost. My doctors were worried and I got to the point that I need a new sport. And luckily enough, I took pickleball a little too seriously. And now I've lost about 20 pounds and I'm at the healthiest I've ever been. Oh, my God. It's incredible. Yeah. I think, I think, and also working with, I do work with, uh, Catherine Parenteau's trainer, Corey Bickert, and he is offered me the chance of a lifetime to work with him. And hopefully one day CP fingers crossed, you know, she's looking for that new partner. I'm here. That's awesome. And, uh, I think, I think, um, working with him and then dieting and just playing every day. I think I, I'm the happiest I've been for a very long time. And I'm happy that I have this semester and this opportunity to both coach, play, work and kick ass and take names. I love it. I love it. It's a great attitude. It really is. Cause I feel like a teenager again. I'm, I'm almost 60 years old and I can eat ice cream again and candy. And you can always, you always could have eaten it. I know, but now I can eat it more because I burned so many calories. Right. I think the other thing is like, uh, this semester I definitely made lemons and do pickled lemonade from yeah. Yeah. Hey, so it is pretty good. The pickled lemonade from Popeye's. It's pretty good. I had it the other day. Oh, you guys should try it. I'm going to have to try it. Yeah. Hey, so tell us, um, do you have any tournaments coming up and where are they at? If you have them, I do. I, I have one this weekend in Lake Geneva, uh, three, five, four, Oh, mix, uh, actually the U of I pickleball club president. Okay. So we wanted to call ourselves the El Presidentes. And, uh, and, and, and our saying is in Selkirk, we trust because we're both Selkirk advocates. Okay. So we're, yeah, so we have to rep, you know, we got a rep. Yep. Definitely. Um, I do love working for Selkirk too. That has been a joy also to like have those opportunities and like all these sponsorships and everything like, like definitely I'm saving money from these sponsorships and, uh, like ambassador programs, which is really cool. Pickleball to do. I think a lot of companies are doing them and I think it's helping a lot of players grow and especially Selkirk, like their advocate program. They got me my PPR, you know, I can coach. Yeah, I can play. And I, well, I love, I love going three. PP, uh, PP, uh, say that again. You love what? Go into the PP. PP. I like the BP. Um, the pros, you're going PPA. I don't know why I couldn't get the aid out of there, but they, they throw really great stuff. I got to go this last year with, uh, to, uh, to one and, uh, I, they were throwing nice towels. They were giving away paddles balls. I mean, it was like, if you don't make the main draw or anything like this, still like levels for everybody to play. And luckily enough, I have the opportunity to play in the challenger series this summer. Yeah. Um, with, with, uh, the PPA. I'm about to do it. Uh, let's hope. Yeah. It's about to be a lot of money. Yeah. Oh, let's, let's get that patient Pickler. Cause I got a, I need to be the best. And then I also, hope we have the best of the best tournament coming up, uh, for Pickler. Also. Nice. Um, we're going to be at pickle con in August. If you, you should go. It's an interesting place. It's fun. Heck, heck to the, yeah, I'm going to be at, I will try my best. Yeah. I'll tell you that. Yeah. All the way. Pickle con was fun last year. And char bar. Oh, did I say that loud? Cause it was fun. If you want to eat some good Barbie, if you like barbecue and you like pickle ball, tar bar, you know, I didn't mention this fun fact about myself. Actually. I actually hold the female record for the most ribs in three minutes. Wow. Did we just become best friends? Well, I'm going to tell you that when we get to the truck, if you come out to pickle con, we'll go to the char bar and we will have a rib. Take that to the T we'll put that to the test. Oh God. I've been retired for years from my eating. Well, we're bringing you out of retirement. Yeah. I, uh, yeah, it was, it was like a total accident that that happened. It's actually at the same fair. My first pickle ball tournament for that. That's hilarious. That's hilarious. Yeah. Well, that's good. Cause you got to burn off. You got to burn the ribs off as you got after you ate all those. Oh yeah. Well, right after I had to go to like some, like I was 13 at the time too. I had 13 ribs in three minutes. Someone asked me. And how many pounds of barbecue sauce down your chest? Oh, it was, it wasn't on my chest. It was in my hair, on my forehead, everywhere, on my, somehow on my legs. I don't know how that happened. But it didn't get on your chest, which is weird. No, it didn't get on my chest, but which was very weird. It was like, and obviously I was covered. Like when it comes to barbecue, it was, Oh my God. Being the rib champ was a lot. Yeah. And I'm the pickleball champ. So that's the new name. Well, the char bar is outstanding. I can't wait to go there again. I got to try it. And if you're coming out, we'll go down there. Yeah.
