So Hello, how are you doing, sweetheart? Good I'm doing good. So what do you think of this place? Crazy, it's really big, huh? Yeah a lot of courts Yeah, we're here at the new relish here and this is Lafayette, right? Louisville, sorry, I always that to always get mixed up at Louisville 19 courts inside and two courts outside Giant facility brand new this is taking over five years. I've been talking to some of the staff It's crazy Nice courts good lighting beautiful colors I already got to play a little bit here this morning. But what do you think of it? All right, so anyway My partner is not here today. I am my real partner with me Greg is in California on another event, but I'll be he'll be chirping in here soon As soon as I can get him on the phone, but we're gonna have some interviews today It's a soft opening. So it's just basic, but we just want to be here for their Get them going so anyway people are next door we'll be interviewing a few of the people a few players here soon and Hopefully I can keep my sweetheart here for a bit Maybe she's pretty nervous All right guys be back soon Hello Everybody, I'm Mike pick ballers next door. We are here at a special event today the opening of the relish We have a special person here Sierra How are you doing this day Sarah? It's so exciting to have this finally be open. I know this has been a while, right? Yeah, it's been a long time coming So we're all super thrilled. Yeah, you're I mean, how long did that how long did they I mean, how long did it take? All the staff Yeah, so it's been a process for sure. I Started I'm the events coordinator here at relish So I'll be doing all internal events things that we plan and I'll be doing external events people who want to have parties Celebrations all that fun stuff. I started about a month ago now and We have a huge staff between the food hall and the pickleball courts, and it's been a long time coming So I know they're really thrilled to finally open the doors and have people working and getting people in here. This is crazy Yeah, I mean is it 21 courts all together 21 all together 19 indoor to outdoor. Yeah, it is incredible. It's a big place I've got to tour it a little bit, but this is nice. Yeah, so I also got another special guest here is my wife my sweetheart She's she she supports my pickleball So, but what's what's the plans I mean for the future here? Yeah, I don't even think we'll be able to Describe that yeah, I'm really excited to see what happens here. I think it's going to be bigger. Hopefully than we can even imagine That's why on the event side of things. I'm just so excited to get things going I mean, obviously we're a pickleball place But we also want to be a place where you play pickleball and you just want to be you just want to hang out Here and we're hoping that we can cultivate that environment. I've been telling my friends This is the 8 to 10 hour pickleball day So you just pretty much take your day off and you just play pickleball and you eat and then play more pickleball or you work From home I like your thinking so you hear that out there all my fans. This is where you come to do your In-house, what is it and you're in home? Work from home, I love it. So yeah, I'm yeah all from relish Yeah, yeah relish is your new office. You do actually have a couple offices that you could use here Yeah, we have some conference rooms which are available to rent out. So we're hoping corporate business parties Places that want to come have their meetings then like, you know midday pickleball tournament with your team team building You can get catered food here. Everything's all in one place Don't have to worry about going anywhere and then you have if you need a little then we got a little bit of yoga here Right. Yeah, we're gonna have yoga Monday through Friday 7 to 8 a.m. Every day. I love it I met I met your what's-his-name the yoga teacher Carson. Great. Yeah, he's a pickleball coach. Yeah, he told us Yeah, he gets you then and then he gets you hard at the pickleball court, that's what he was telling us Yeah, it's great. It's a great balance. So we're gonna offer other classes in there as well We're gonna have Pilates as of right now. It's Tuesday's at TBD and then we also are gonna have kettlebell classes Here for helping with pickleball everything's designed to help with pickleball, but you also don't have to play You can just come enjoy the classes. So I think that's nice like my wife She's she just she'll play but she doesn't like to play so she could be doing some Zen work Well, I'm doing some some other Zen work on the court. She can go grab coffee You know, yeah, I can't wait the food I've heard this is gonna be you have chefs here that are actually cooking Yeah, so we have eight food stalls We have pizza We have soups salad sandwiches charcuterie boards and Mexican magic food bus, which is Burgers sandwiches we have Venezuelan food. We have shari bowls And we have ice cream also you bowls and smoothies so we have anything you could want Yeah, what I'll be doing. Yeah, exactly We also have a coffee shop and a full bar. So it's incredible. Yeah, and then what's this? Where did you find this foosball table? It's an eight-man foosball table our owner Jeff has been so excited as soon as they tipped it the right way the construction workers He made every construction worker play with it Like I know where I'm gonna be spending my time it's the biggest foosball table I've ever seen in my life It's it's been very very Anticipated waited for they've been very excited to have that. So well, we're excited to have you and thank you for being on our Podcast and we're gonna be talking a lot more because both of us I'm kind of an event coordinator at the pickleball Yeah, well with the with the pickleball podcast We travel all over the world that my partner is actually in San Diego right now. Yeah, he's doing a he's doing another podcast somewhere else Yeah, we're all over we're growing and I love it. The people were just so kind to us. That would be better I like it the way it is right now. Yeah. Yeah, you guys I can't wait to you You haven't seen this place yet, but it's it's quite the place. I mean, it's 19 courts in 21 courts all together two outside nine Food court like a it's not even a food court. It's like nine different places. You can get different types of food Interesting. They got the biggest foosball table. I've ever seen in my life eight people foosball table I don't know. But I mean, I want to learn just because this looks fun. So But anyway, yeah, so we just had Sierra on she's awesome so she's the event coordinator and Then we I got to play a little bit which was kind of fun because it's kind of quiet the lighting the lighting. It's okay I mean, I'm not It's good. It's the courts are all on an angle. It's super it's a different so interesting But it doesn't really matter. I mean, you don't feel the angle but when you're in here the way they built their courts So, how's the weather and everything where you are right now? It's gorgeous It was kind of hot yesterday and we when we drove through Hurricane, Utah I found a couple places and it was a hundred and two and that was nasty Oh like right now, it's we're in Long Beach. It's a kind of um, you know, it's obviously a beach town We're about two miles three miles from the beach. So it's very comfortable right now in the morning We're driving back from dinner last night and we drove by Cal State Long Beach Found the Billie Jean King Pickleball Center. Oh, are you gonna go there? No, cuz we're leaving today We're headed to West Hollywood and I'm gonna try to find something in there. Oh, yeah Yeah, I'm gonna try something find something out there. See how that goes. Yeah That could be good or bad. You know, what's what road what Street you go down, huh? Right. Yeah It's it's gonna be it's gonna be an adventure today a lot of going to West Hollywood and then tomorrow We're headed up to like Central, California like Bakersfield Fresno area. Oh nice. I'm gonna play up there, too Yeah, I love it. I love it Well, I just I miss my partner here, but it's nice that I got you online here My you know, definitely can't wait. We're gonna come back here. This is the soft opening today But we'll be back here in June for their grand opening when all the restaurants and everything are open so you'll be back Yeah, we'll go from there. I'm looking forward to coming and seeing it. Oh, you will and a good play I mean, and I think there's plenty of courts You heard you heard my little mouse in the background yeah, and she so she doesn't have to do this. Yeah. She's like no She's gonna be our video person, so that's awesome. We love it. Oh, there's crazy things tear, too They got yoga. So if you feel a little like stressed out can go do a little yoga Kettlebells you need to get those muscles pumped up. We can do a little kettlebells together. You know what I mean? Oh, yeah, or I can tire your tire. You're out your arms so that your service slower We're going to pickle con and we're doing it again, and I'll make sure that guns on because I think I had it We'll be there. Well. There's a soft opening. They're not doing a grand opening yet Yeah, but I was just I'm always excited to see you. We like to play together, so Today I really like the color scheme and The like the aesthetic is really super cool. Oh, yeah, really like mellow and chill Yeah, and isn't it funny that almost all the courts were busy, but it didn't like there was nobody in here I know it's crazy. They have 18 courts the ceilings are super high from lobbying. Don't get me started on the lobby Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, well we just had a special lobber Yeah, so the food court actually isn't open yet, but it looks like it's gonna be super sick. Yeah, there's and yeah There's like eight rest. I think there's like eight restaurants that are gonna be serving different types of food, so it's great coffee There's a coffee bar There's a bar bar, so you could get a little crazy. Yeah, I could see there's lots of room It's great for entertainment even though the restaurants aren't open yet. You can still get lobsters here. Yeah There was a lobster here I Love it. Yeah, you know the fun part of pickleball is you never know who you're gonna play Yeah, it was like skills and drills with this guy lobbying every serve He loved and then wasn't he doing like a forced a punch volley for everything So he would lob you and then you'd get up to the kitchen and he'd body bag you I mean this dude's insane Yeah, I think he was giving some lessons afterwards too, wasn't he? No, I've never seen anybody lob so every shot like not just one shot every shot So third shot So it was and it's a long game I mean the dude's got style. He has his own. I mean we all have it, right? There's just some special styles that stand out a little more than others And this one really stood out You too, it's always great to see you my partner's not here and all sad he's in California He's doing so San Clemente has a pro-am going on and he's going to LA today to like play in some court So we're gonna interview some I just told him watch what streets he goes down Yeah, it could be a good street a bad street. So we should go to the Viper room. Oh the Viper room What's what's the Viper room? Sadly enough, that's I think we're Johnny dad. Oh, yes. Okay. I know you're talking Spot yeah My gosh, yeah But I'm not sure if they have pickleball courts there. I don't know. He's gonna find him I mean, you know how much he loves playing pickleball. Yeah, that's cool. I really miss Greg, but I miss him I he's like it's like my arms missing without him here I know Well after playing a lobster boy, I probably need one Well, we won't mention, you know, we never mentioned names everybody plays the way they play that's right and there's no good There is no We had some today It's not gonna stop but I'm so I just love every time I see you you guys are great I mean everywhere I am or you are we're always together. Isn't that the best it's been a good morning, it's nice and you gotta pick what court you kind of know where you want To play like you get a good play in. Oh, yeah I got a good play in at the front courts over here You can see what's going on and get to see all your friends here And then in the back courts and I go back there and teach I'm kind of out of everybody's way. I love it I love it. Great. It's great facility. I love teaching here So how long did you mean how long did you know you were gonna come here and to start working for them? So it was Almost to the day. It was four years ago that Jeff the owner reached out to me through a mutual friend He had heard about pickleball. He was Original concept was a food hall with basketball and Club volleyball club volleyball and he heard about pickleball and he thinks maybe I can get some old people in here in the middle Of the day and create some revenue So we talked and I go hey Jeff, how about if we give you a presentation because I have been working with a small group We were looking at expanding pickleball in the community between trying to get private and public funding So we already had like a presentation deck together. I come back in maybe a couple days later presented to Jeff and Tori who's the GM and They're like, I'm like pickleball is the hottest thing and give them all the stats and you need to be a pickleball place and They're like what and to their credit. They're like, let's talk about it meeting after meeting We bring people in from the pickleball community. We talked about pickleball. We show them about the Phenomenal growth and the potential. Yeah, and this is four years ago. Wow. Yeah. Oh, yeah, it's it's it's up like 320% that's where the stat is right now. It is amazing and to Jeff and Tori's credit They're like, okay, maybe we got something here then. Oh, yeah, let's become a pickleball facility And here we are finally four years later four years later, but they didn't go small though Wasn't like let's try this. Let's go big or go home. This is big That was that Jeff is like, what's the biggest indoor pickleball facility and let's make it one court Will be the biggest court, but of course in that four years you see the phenomenal growth of indoor pickleball facility Obviously in general. What was it? What did it take? I mean, I've heard so many stories because I've been waiting for this to open for the last four years What was it it was a lot I heard a lot with cities a lot of planning I mean was it a lot of that that took that long to build or was it just a build-out? There was a lot of factors involved They've got a like a business HOA here. So they've got to get by in from all the other businesses here Wow takes a while Dealing with the city as much But you've got to deal with cities and that kind of stuff so there were a lot of struggles along the way But to their credit, they they stuck it out with it. Yeah, and and here we are Oh, yeah with all and you're talking eight restaurants nine restaurants are in here Eight restaurants. Yeah, no a huge bar area between the indoor outdoor seating area. I think they're above 600 Places where you can sit it's huge. It's huge. It's great. It's going to be Such a great Addition for the community and that was the mission from from very early on You know Jeff is raising a family here He wants something that is community oriented a place where people can come whether you know pickleball or not You just want to come here With with your friends or with the date or with your wife. Yeah or with your kids bring them I mean, this is a spot. It's gonna It's going to be great for this for this area Oh, yeah, and I think that I think I call this the six to ten hour pickleball place because I'm gonna come and eat Play pickleball eat and play pickleball You're gonna go maybe to one of the breakout rooms and take a zoom call because you're still working Do that Play some more pickleball go hit the showers and along that don't forget to go stretch One of the biggest things that we see about pickleball that that we really don't like is people just come hit the ball around and Then start. Yeah, this thing here. You've got you've got Pilates you've got Yoga, we've got PT people. That'll be here on site We've got stretch zones and all that kind of stuff Take care of your body before and after you play pickleball and then go shower and then go grab a drink This sounds like a true coach I Love it. I love it. This is a true coach right here. So but you know, you're right I mean this dinking ever since I started about four years ago Dinking I was like, this is warm-up and then you're gonna smack a ball and run around a court Well, you know right now pickleball has the most injuries of any other sport in the world to right now. Yeah So, oh, yeah, yeah Part of what I'm doing here teaching is not necessarily how to get better But is how to keep your body healthy and things you should not be doing on the pickleball court Yeah, don't be running backwards on a pickleball No You know Get your feet underneath you when your opponent's getting ready to hit the ball these kind of things that are going to help preserve you And then go stretch to take care of your body. We all you know have that extra 15 minutes. We don't realize it Yeah, it's kind of rush rush and we just need to change our mindset Well, what's 15 minutes when now you won't get to play pickleball for six to eight months. You heard that you hurt yourself So and it happens all the time that couple that you were just talking to they took a clinic with Ben Johns and like everybody's What's the one thing I need to do? What's the one piece of advice you can give everybody and Ben Johns at that point? I think he was 22 years old. He's like, oh, that's simple. Take care of your body Beforehand play pickleball and then cool down afterwards. Take care of your body. Yeah It is it's the truth it really is the truth and I see it all the time myself and I'm guilty too You know because I get in I'm coming late and all I can think is that they're ready to play and and they've already even Warmed up, so I'm just jumping in. Guess what? I do. I pull strain something and I'm getting older I don't like to admit it, but I'm getting older so it gets tougher on the body Yeah, I mean when I look at my workout routine five years ago to what it is right now Like 50% of my workout is stretching balancing. How do I keep my body healthy? Injury free so I can continue to do the things that I love to do and pickleball is one of the things I want to Do I don't want to be on the sidelines and but I've been Very much in control of that and it's just a different mindset. You got to get yourself wrapped around. I love it I love it. I I've owned gyms and been part of gyms So I really understand it and that's why I laugh when because you're the coach, you know It I'm telling you it's it's just a thing that needs to happen You know what? I mean, and then you know longevity of this can be whatever I mean one of the gentlemen I was just talking to here is 83 years old. Yeah, and he's playing full-time every day Well, this is this is awesome and if you want a good trainer I'm early excited to come down here meet Joe come play teal teacher, but you're gonna do a little warm-up.
