How to Hit a Legal Erne Shot

Kitchen rules

The Erne is one of the most athletic and surprising shots in pickleball, named after Erne Perry. It involves hitting a volley while positioned outside the sideline, effectively bypassing the kitchen restrictions.

The Legal Erne Maneuver

To execute a legal Erne, you must move to the out-of-bounds area next to the kitchen before hitting the ball. You can either jump over the kitchen corner or step around it, provided you do not touch the kitchen line or the kitchen itself during the process.

Jump vs. Step-Around

The 'Jump Erne' requires you to jump from behind the kitchen line and land out of bounds past the sideline before or after hitting the ball. The 'Step Erne' is simpler; you just walk to the out-of-bounds area when you see the opponent's shot coming wide.

Common Erne Mistakes

The most frequent mistake is 'jumping the gun' and touching the kitchen line during the takeoff. Another common fault is hitting the ball before it has crossed the plane of the net; you must wait for the ball to be on your side.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I jump over the kitchen and land inside the court?

No. If you are volleying, you cannot land in the kitchen. To be a legal Erne, you must land outside the court boundaries or behind the non-volley zone line.

Can I hit an Erne if the ball bounces?

Technically yes, but it's just a standard shot then. The 'Erne' specifically refers to the tactical advantage of volleying from a position where the kitchen rules don't apply.

Can I touch the net while doing an Erne?

No. Touching the net, net cable, or posts at any time while the ball is in play results in an immediate fault.

Do I have to land before I hit the ball in an Erne?

No, you can hit the ball while in the air, but you must have jumped from a legal position (outside the kitchen) and must not land in the kitchen.
