Calling the Score in Pickleball Doubles
The three-number score call is unique to pickleball doubles and often confuses new players. Calling it correctly is a requirement of the game and keeps everyone on the same page regarding positioning.
The Three-Number Sequence
The score in doubles is called as three distinct numbers: the serving team's score, the receiving team's score, and finally the server number (either 1 or 2). For example, '5, 3, 1' means the server's team has 5 points, the opponents have 3, and it is the first server.
Identifying Server 1 and 2
Each team has two servers per side-out. The first person to serve when their team gains the serve is designated as 'Server 1' for that rotation. If they lose a rally, their partner becomes 'Server 2' and takes over the serve.
The Exception: Start of Game
At the very beginning of a match, the starting team only gets one server to offset the advantage of serving first. The score is called as 0-0-2 (or 0-0-start) to signify that they are already on their second and final server.
When to Call the Score
The server must call the entire score clearly before they begin their service motion. This gives the receiving team time to ensure they are in the correct positions and ready for the ball.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does the first team only get one server?
This rule prevents the starting serving team from having an unfair advantage by getting two full chances to score points before the other team has had any opportunity to serve.
What if I call the wrong score?
If you realize the error before the serve, stop and correct it. If the rally starts, play continues until the end of the point, and the correct score is then established for the next serve.
Does 'Server 1' change during the game?
No, the person who starts the side-out as the first server remains Server 1 for that specific rotation. However, who starts as Server 1 can change each time your team gains the side-out.
Can my partner call the score for me?
No, the person currently serving is responsible for calling the score loudly and clearly so that all players on the court can hear it.
