Pickleball Referee Certification
Pickleball Referee Certification
Refereeing is a complete career path in pickleball — not a fallback. Certified referees work events from local club tournaments all the way to USA Pickleball Nationals and the US Open. No playing career required.
Why Become a Referee?
USA Pickleball Referee Certification — Three Levels
Level 1 — Provisional Referee
The starting point. Complete the USA Pickleball online referee course and pass the written exam (score 80% or higher). You're then eligible to officiate at sanctioned tournaments under the supervision of a certified referee. Provisional status is valid for one year.
Level 2 — Certified Referee
Earned after completing your provisional year, officiating a required number of matches at sanctioned events, and passing an on-court evaluation with a Referee Trainer. Certified referees work independently at sanctioned events without supervision and are eligible for regional and national events.
Level 3 — Gold Referee / Referee Emeritus
The highest USA Pickleball referee designation. Gold-level referees are selected by the USA Pickleball officiating committee based on demonstrated excellence, consistency, and leadership. These are the officials you see on the main courts at Nationals and the US Open. Referee Emeritus is a lifetime recognition for sustained contribution.
How to Progress — Step by Step
Available at usapickleball.org. Covers the official rulebook, line calls, kitchen violations, serving faults, scoring, and officiating procedures. Takes approximately 4–6 hours to complete. Pass the written exam with 80%+ to receive your Provisional certification.
Contact local tournament directors and offer to referee. You'll be paired with certified referees who will mentor you. Log every match — you'll need documented match experience to advance to Certified level.
A Referee Trainer will observe you officiating live matches and score your performance against a standardized rubric. This covers rule application, positioning, communication, and demeanor. Most provisional referees schedule this within 6–12 months of starting.
Once certified, you can apply to work regional championships, state championships, and national-level events. USA Pickleball maintains a registry of certified referees that tournament directors draw from when staffing major events.
This is a recognition, not an application. Consistently referee at high-profile events, mentor incoming provisional referees, and be known in the officiating community. Gold designations are awarded by the USA Pickleball officiating committee to those who have made a significant long-term contribution.
Line Judge vs. Referee
Many people start as line judges before pursuing full referee certification. Line judges assist the referee with out/in calls and don't require the same depth of rule knowledge. It's an excellent way to learn the competitive environment before committing to the full certification pathway.
Line judge training is offered by USA Pickleball and most regional tournament organizers. No formal certification required to start.
