The Third Shot Drop Explained
The third shot drop is widely considered the most important shot in pickleball. It allows the serving team to safely transition to the kitchen line, neutralizing the receiving team's initial advantage.
What is a Third Shot Drop?
The third shot drop is a soft arc shot hit from the baseline that lands in the opponent's kitchen. Because the receiving team is already at the net, a hard drive is often easily volleyed back. The drop forces them to hit a soft shot, allowing you to run to the net.
The Mechanics of the Drop
Use a motion similar to an underhand toss. Keep your wrist firm and use your legs and shoulder to provide the lift. Think of it as a 'long dink.' You want the ball to peak on your side of the net and fall gently into the opponent's non-volley zone.
When to Drive Instead of Drop
While the drop is preferred, a 'third shot drive' can be effective if the return of serve is short or weak. Driving the ball can freeze your opponents, making your follow-up fifth shot drop much easier to execute.
Moving to the Net
Do not automatically run to the net after hitting a drop. Watch the quality of your shot. If the drop is high, stay back and prepare to defend. If the drop is low and successful, move forward quickly to join your opponents at the kitchen line.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where should I aim my third shot drop?
Aiming for the middle of the kitchen is usually safest, as it reduces the angle for the opponent's reply. Alternatively, aim for the backhand of the player who is less mobile to force a weaker fourth shot.
Why does my third shot drop always hit the net?
You are likely hitting the ball too flat. Focus on creating more of an arc. Aim for a target about 2-3 feet above the net to ensure the ball has enough clearance to land safely in the kitchen.
Is a third shot drop better than a drive?
At higher levels of play, the drop is essential for neutralizing the point. However, mixing in drives can keep opponents off balance. The best strategy uses both depending on the situation.
Can I hit a third shot drop on the run?
It is very difficult. Try to set your feet before hitting the ball. If you are forced to move, focus on a high, safe arc that gives you time to recover your court position.
