When to Switch Sides in Pickleball

Switch sides

Switching sides is a common practice in pickleball to ensure fairness regarding wind, sun, and court conditions. Knowing when to make the move keeps the game moving smoothly and ensures no team has an environmental advantage.

Recreational Play Protocol

In most recreational games played to 11, teams switch sides when the first team reaches 6 points. This is especially important on outdoor courts where one side may be facing a direct sun glare or strong headwinds.

Tournament Best-of-Three

In tournament matches played as a best-of-three series, teams switch sides after each completed game. If a third 'tie-breaker' game is required, teams switch ends again once the first team reaches the midpoint score.

The Mid-Game Switch

For games played to 15, teams usually switch sides when the first team reaches 8 points. In longer games to 21, the switch typically happens when a team hits 11 points. This ensures both teams play an equal amount of time on both sides.

Why Switching Matters

Factors like sun glare, wind direction, and even court surface variations can significantly impact play. Switching sides ensures that neither team is stuck with a permanent disadvantage due to the elements or court layout.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do we switch sides in every single game?

In standard recreational play, it is optional but highly recommended. In sanctioned tournaments, it is mandatory to switch at the designated point to maintain competitive integrity.

What happens to the score during a switch?

The score stays exactly as it was. You simply pause the game, move your equipment to the other end of the court, and resume play with the same server and score.

Can we choose not to switch sides?

If both teams agree in a casual game, you can stay on your original sides. However, if even one player requests the switch at the midpoint, the rules dictate that the switch must happen.

Do we switch servers when we switch sides?

No, the serve stays with whoever currently had it. Player positions relative to their partners also remain the same; you just mirror your positions on the opposite end.
