Youth Pickleball Tournament Pathway
Youth Pickleball Tournament Pathway
From your first local junior event to a USA Pickleball national championship, there is a clear competitive ladder for young players. Here is how it works — and what it takes to climb it.
Step 1 — Get Rated with DUPR
DUPR (Dynamic Universal Pickleball Rating) has no minimum age. Young players can register for free at mydupr.com and log match results from any format — recreational, club, or tournament. A DUPR rating is the single most useful number a competitive junior can have because it is recognized across all tours and events.
Step 2 — USA Pickleball Junior Membership
A USA Pickleball membership is required to compete in any sanctioned junior event. Junior memberships are available at a reduced rate. Membership unlocks access to the national ranking system, sanctioned tournament entry, and eligibility for the Junior National Championships.
What Your Membership Includes
- Official USA Pickleball skill rating (separate from DUPR)
- Access to sanctioned tournament draws in your age division
- Eligibility for Junior National Championships
- Official rulebook and referee contact network
- Pathway to USA Pickleball national team consideration
Step 3 — Local & Regional Junior Tournaments
Most states have an active junior tournament circuit operating through USA Pickleball-sanctioned events and independent tournament organizers. These are the best starting points for new competitors — smaller fields, age-grouped draws, and lower stakes while skills develop.
How to Find Junior Events
- USA Pickleball tournament finder at usapickleball.org — filter by Junior division
- Pickleball Brackets (pickleballbrackets.com) — independent event listings
- Local club bulletin boards and social media groups
- State pickleball associations (e.g., Colorado Pickleball Association)
- The Picklr, Life Time, and other large club networks with in-house junior events
Step 4 — USA Pickleball Junior National Championships
The USA Pickleball Junior National Championships is the pinnacle of junior competition in the United States. Held annually, the event draws the top-ranked juniors in each age division from across the country. Results directly impact national junior rankings maintained by USA Pickleball.
Qualification
Players qualify through performance at sanctioned regional events and by achieving a minimum USA Pickleball skill rating in their division. Top-ranked players in each age division may receive direct invitation.
Divisions Offered
Singles and doubles in each age bracket (10U through 19U). Mixed doubles is offered for older divisions. Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals awarded per draw.
Impact on Rankings
National Championship results carry maximum weight in USA Pickleball junior rankings. A gold medal at Nationals is the most direct path to being recognized as the top junior in your age group in the country.
Step 5 — APP & PPA Open Draws
There is no minimum age requirement to enter professional pickleball events. Elite juniors with DUPR ratings above 5.5 regularly enter APP and PPA open draws to compete alongside ranked professionals. This is how standout players like Anna Leigh Waters first made their mark.
APP Tour
The APP Tour features open amateur draws that run alongside professional events. A top junior can enter the amateur bracket, earn ranking points, and compete on the same courts as the pros the same weekend.
APP Tour rankings →PPA Tour
The PPA Tour hosts the most competitive events on the professional circuit. Juniors entering PPA draws typically need a 5.5+ DUPR and should expect to face top-100 professionals in early rounds.
PPA Tour rankings →The US Open — A Junior Milestone
The US Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida is one of the most prestigious events in the sport and offers junior-specific draws alongside its professional and amateur fields. For a junior player, competing at the US Open — even in an age-division bracket — is a meaningful benchmark.
- Annual event held in Naples, FL (typically April)
- Junior draws in multiple age divisions and skill brackets
- Thousands of players across all levels — juniors compete in a high-energy professional atmosphere
- Open to all skill levels — no qualifying round required for age-division entry
Find Junior Programs Near You
Competing is only part of the picture. Finding the right training environment — a club with a youth program, a coach who works with juniors, a local league with age-group play — is what accelerates development between tournaments.
